When Should You Consider an Endometriosis Assessment?

Consider seeing a gynecologist if you experience:

  • Severe period pain affecting work, school or daily activities
  • Menstrual pain that becomes progressively worse
  • Persistent or recurring pelvic pain
  • Deep pain during or after sexual intercourse
  • Pain during bowel movements or urination, particularly during periods
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding alongside pelvic pain
  • Difficulty becoming pregnant
  • A previous ovarian cyst or suspected chocolate cyst (endometrioma)

How Is Endometriosis Assessed?

Your assessment begins with a discussion of your symptoms and medical history, particularly how pelvic pain relates to your menstrual cycle. Your OB/GYN may recommend additional examinations depending on your individual circumstances.

Pelvic Ultrasound

Ultrasound can identify some findings associated with endometriosis, particularly ovarian endometriomas and certain deeper lesions. It can also help assess other possible causes of pelvic pain.

Pelvic Examination

When appropriate, a pelvic examination may help identify areas of tenderness, masses or other findings that require further assessment.

Ultrasound may be performed through the abdomen or vagina, depending on your circumstances and preferences. A transvaginal ultrasound is not required for every patient.
