Antenatal Blood Tests & Screening

50 g Glucose Challenge Test (GCT)

Screening for gestational diabetes, typically performed at 24–28 weeks of pregnancy.

  • Drink a solution containing 50 g of glucose
  • One blood sample collected 1 hour later
  • No fasting required
  • Allow approximately 1 hour for the test

100 g Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT)

A diagnostic test that may be recommended following an abnormal gestational diabetes screening result or when clinically indicated.

  • Fast for at least 8 hours before testing
  • Blood samples collected while fasting and at 1, 2 and 3 hours after drinking glucose
  • Allow approximately 3 hours for the test after the first blood sample

Second Antenatal Blood Tests (Lab 2)

Follow-up blood tests commonly performed around 28–32 weeks of pregnancy to reassess maternal health before delivery.

  • Complete blood count (CBC)
  • Repeat HIV screening
  • Repeat syphilis screening
