When Should You See a Gynecologist?

A gynecological consultation and pelvic examination may be appropriate if you experience:

  • Unusual vaginal discharge or changes in colour, smell or consistency
  • Vaginal or vulval itching, burning or irritation
  • Sores, bumps or lumps around the genital area
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding or bleeding after intercourse
  • Pain or discomfort during intercourse
  • Possible vaginal infections or sexually transmitted infections
  • Concerns about gynecological health or cervical cancer screening

If you also experience pelvic pain, irregular periods or symptoms that may involve the uterus or ovaries, your doctor may recommend a pelvic ultrasound.

What Happens During a Pelvic Examination?

Your female OB/GYN will first discuss your symptoms, medical history and concerns. Depending on your needs, the examination may include an external genital examination and the use of a speculum to examine the vagina and cervix. Additional samples can be collected during the same appointment if indicated.

Pelvic Examination

Assessment of the external genital area, vagina and cervix for findings that can be identified during a physical examination.

Pelvic Ultrasound

Ultrasound may be recommended to assess the uterus, uterine lining and ovaries, including possible fibroids or ovarian cysts.

ThinPrep & HPV DNA Testing

Cervical screening can be arranged when appropriate. ThinPrep examines cervical cells, while HPV DNA testing detects high-risk HPV types.

Vaginal Infection & STI Testing

If symptoms or risk factors suggest an infection, your doctor may recommend swab-based, urine or blood testing depending on the infection being assessed.

Not everyone needs every examination or test. Your doctor will explain what is appropriate, and you can discuss any concerns before proceeding.

Will a Pelvic Examination Hurt?

You may experience some pressure or mild discomfort, but a pelvic examination should not cause significant pain. If this is your first examination, you feel anxious or you have experienced pain during previous examinations, please let your doctor know.

Your doctor can explain each step, adjust the examination where appropriate, and stop at any time if you feel uncomfortable. An internal examination will only be performed with your consent.
