When Should You Consider a Pelvic Pain Assessment?

Consider seeing an OB/GYN if you experience:

  • Severe period pain that interferes with work, school or daily life
  • Frequent or persistent lower abdominal or pelvic pain
  • Sharp pain or discomfort on one side of the pelvis
  • Deep pain during or after sexual intercourse
  • Pelvic pain accompanied by unusual vaginal discharge
  • Pelvic pain with abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Pain that is worsening or different from your usual symptoms

You do not need to wait until the pain becomes unbearable before seeking an assessment.

How Is Pelvic Pain Assessed?

Your OB/GYN will ask about the location and timing of your pain, its relationship to your menstrual cycle and any associated symptoms. Further investigations are selected according to your individual circumstances.

Pelvic Examination & Ultrasound

A pelvic examination and ultrasound may be recommended to assess the uterus, ovaries and other pelvic findings.

Infection & STI Testing

Infection testing may be appropriate if pelvic pain occurs alongside unusual discharge, pain during sex or other symptoms suggesting an infection.

Urine Testing

Urine testing may be considered if you have burning during urination, urinary frequency or symptoms suggesting a urinary tract condition.

Pregnancy Testing

A pregnancy test may be recommended when pregnancy is possible, particularly if pelvic pain is accompanied by a missed period or unexpected bleeding.

Not everyone requires every test. Your doctor will explain which examinations are appropriate and discuss them with you beforehand.
